060302stray mutt byu opinion Afghan Student Sentenced to Death for Downloading Paper Against IslamDid I read that right? Isn’t Afghanistan one of the good guys now? The only thing this guy did, was download and print a paper from the Internet that humiliated Islam? It seems to me that these actions by the court do more to humiliate Islam that any paper could, no matter what it said! Here is another twist, it was written by an Iraqi!

“We completely condemn this trial,” Samandar said. “It goes against the freedom of speech and the freedom of the press.”

Well, I sure hope they get this straight, doesn’t make them look too free if you ask me!

It’s true that the US and Afghanistan are allies in the “war on terrorism” (In itself open for critique) but to say that Afghanistan are “good guys” now is a bit of a stretch.
As far as I’ve understood, this practically makes the Afghan army puppets of the US army, while USA ignores domestic affairs. Iow, Afghanistan is what it has always been when it comes to freedom of speech and opinion.
Sad, but in my opinion not surprising at all.
And it’s not in any way certain that things would’ve been better if USA had tried to change the situation in this matter. I believe it would only have been fuel for the conservative forces in Afghanistan. In my opinion this kind of change must come from the grass roots, ie have a broad support in the population.

It happened in Afghanistan, so I’m not even that surprised, nothing seems to change there with time. People will not be totally free or equal there for ages.

CarpetGuy, Afghani Islamic Traditions are a bit different from other Islamic countries’ traditions. So I don’t really see how their court’s ludicrousity could humiliate Islam.

This is just one of those things that makes me glad that I am an American! It makes me glad to know, that as a believer, all I have to do is love my neighbor, although some would disagree, but that is what my bible says. I feel for the oppressed people in the world, but, America wouldn’t be here if we hadn’t gotten sick of the Brits old restrictions on religion, among other things. So, maybe one day, someone over there will drop a pair and stand up for Freedom!

Someone will, it’s just a matter of time. I hope, it will happen soon, but I doubt it…
