Yeah. I’m not going to call this a good idea. In fact, I can’t think of a worse idea.
The big shakeup heading into this weekend had to be the exit of Reince Priebus as White House chief of staff, with the role immediately being filled by John Kelly, the [now] former head of Homeland Security.
This shuffling of staff has left Homeland Security in need of leadership, which is unfortunate, because Kelly was actually doing good things, there.
One thing I’m sure of, however, is that Anthony Scaramucci will not be able to bully Kelly the same way he bullied Priebus out of his position.
So now that there is that hole to be filled with Homeland Security, who takes over as the new head?
According to Fox News’ Dana Perino, this the perfect opportunity to remove Jeff Sessions as attorney general, without the ugly business of “firing” him.
“I think that this was all set up for a few weeks because the president has been so upset about Jeff Sessions and his recusal in the Russia investigation,” Perino suggested on her show “The Five.”
“The Republicans and conservatives that came to Jeff Sessions’ defense this week all said, ‘But he’s doing the best on the issue we care about most, and that is immigration,’” she continued.
“Well, where can Jeff Sessions do even more on immigration? As the Secretary of Homeland Security,” Perino said. “So I think what they’re going to try to do is move Sessions over to DHS, and then how can conservatives complain?”
Right. As long as he’s not fired, just brought into the shuffle, those who have rushed to defend Sessions against Trump’s onslaught of Twitter-shaming would calm right down, surely.
Perino went on the give the really tasty part of this plan.
Perino added that removing Sessions from his post would also clear the way for Trump to appoint a new attorney general who could “fire” Robert Mueller, the special counsel in charge of leading the probe into Russian election interference. Trump has expressed anger at Mueller’s investigation, calling it a “witch hunt.”
“And then you have a new AG who can fire Mueller,” Perino said.
That’s it, in a nutshell. Bring in an AG whose loyalties are more to the throne than to the laws of our nation.
To be clear, I don’t doubt Jeff Sessions could do a great job with the Department of Homeland Security, but this isn’t about that, at this point.
If the purpose of this shuffling of staff is a pretext for getting rid of Jeff Sessions and stopping the investigation surrounding the Trump campaign team and Russian meddling in a U.S. election, there is no way to make this a good thing for our nation.
And no way does it take the heat off of President Trump, but rather, it makes him look more guilty of something, than ever before.
We’ll have to wait and see if Perino is right, and this is a calculated plot by Trump and his staff to get Sessions out of the way, without incurring the wrath of his defenders in the senate.
If it happens, however, there needs to be a hard push back. Even if placed somewhere else, it’s still effectively “firing” Sessions, in which case, Trump will have fired an FBI director, as well as an attorney general, in order to block an active investigation into a hostile foreign government’s interference in a U.S. election.
The galling part is that people who should know better aren’t even trying to hide the fact that obstruction is the goal.
