Many of you are convinced you can sit on the sidelines or quietly take the side of the Republican Establishment in the upcoming primary season. Many of you are convinced it does not matter. Many of you are convinced that the GOP will do the right thing once they have control. Many of you will be made to care by a Republican Party intent on | Read More »
Despite the fact that the Ryan-Murray budget deal passed the House with overwhelming support, it was not a slam dunk in the Senate as of late last week. Without Paul Ryan’s strong influence, individual GOP senators were leery of the deal. Even the defense hawks view this deal as ‘too little too late.’ The Senate whip count began with only one Republican – John McCain | Read More »
Speaker Boehner’s budget deal, rammed through the House in violation of his own promise, has been rejected by nearly all GOP Senators. His legacy will be a budget deal that passes the Senate will only Democrat votes.
It is an odd fight. Such a weird little battle over meaningless and known outcomes. Conservatives, aware from press reports and congressional leaks, knew what would be in the Paul Ryan drafted budget plan. The conservative groups released statements in opposition to the plan based on what they had been told. But there was never any doubt about the Ryan plan passing. After the plan | Read More »
We’ve noted many times that the GOP Senate Conference is rotten to the core, as Harry Reid can count on a supermajority at any given time to pass liberal legislation. Shot, December 10, 2013 (all bolding mine): Four of the states with their own exchanges – Connecticut, Kentucky, Rhode Island and Washington – have sites that have run especially smoothly, becoming models for states such as Arkansas, Idaho, Illinois and New Mexico that are planning to launch their own sites in 2014. | Read More »
Everyone really should be able to admit it is the oddest and most nonsensical fight. The Ryan budget does raise taxes. It does fund Obamacare. It does break sequestration. And it does nothing to address the debt and deficit. It is a compromised can kicked down the road just to a further distance than normal. In doing so, though, it violates a lot of what | Read More »
We already know that Ryan-Murray budget bill raises taxes and spending to fund Obamacare and the TSA. Tonight we learn that this deal contains a provision which allows the Senate to pass tax increases with just 51 votes. But there is another problem with the bill that has been overlooked. The priorities implicit in the smorgasbord of notional spending offsets are completely dyslexic. Most of | Read More »
